Lake Worth is located in Palm Beach County Florida. The 2006 population recorded by the US Census Bureau was 36,342. The city of Lake Worth is named after a lake now called the Lake Worth Lagoon. The lagoon opens to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. A large unincorporated area with a Lake Worth postal address is located to the west of the city and includes the Lake Worth Corridor, as well as The Fountains, Lago Lucerne, Lake Osborne Estates, Melaleuca Lane Corridor, and Lake Charleston. The 2006 Census estimates this area's population as 154,892. The total population of both incorporated and unincorporated Lake Worth is estimated by the 2006 Census to be 190,377. The median income for a household in the city was $30,034, and the median income for a family was $35,374. Males had a median income of $24,862 versus $22,971 for females. Per capita income for the city was $15,517. The city's downtown area has developed a distinct character and is a regular destination for both tourists and residents of South Florida. Downtown Lake Worth is home to the Lake Worth Playhouse, and the Museum of the City of Lake Worth. Yearly festivals such as Finlandia Week and the Street Painting Festival attract thousands of people. The city has a bimonthly street festival called Friday on the Avenues with both Lake and Lucerne Avenues being blocked to traffic and food and art kiosks being set up around the antique Town Clock in the square in front of City Hall Annex.
